WFIU partners with IU Credit Union and Beacon for Giving Tuesday

Bloomington, Ind., November 18, 2022 – WFIU Public Radio, IU Credit Union and Beacon are teaming up to help give back to the Bloomington community this Tuesday, November 29.

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement that was created in 2012 to encourage people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a global, year-round movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity.

For every contribution WFIU receives on Giving Tuesday, the IU Credit Union will provide a pair of socks to the Shalom Center, Beacon’s daytime shelter in Bloomington.

“The most requested item by homeless people when they first enter our shelter is a pair of warm, dry socks,” said Reverend Forrest Gilmore, Beacon’s executive director. “When you lose your home, you often lose just about everything else too. Lifting people up by helping them with the basics like food, shelter and clothing is the first step in the journey home. This Giving Tuesday partnership with IU Credit Union and WFIU will help make this first step a smooth one.

WFIU station operations director John Bailey said Giving Tuesday is a time to celebrate the good that all public service organizations, including public radio stations and organizations like Beacon, do on a daily basis.

“Thanks to the generosity of IU Credit Union, we can share the limelight. WFIU listeners will not only be able to reinforce the essential news and music they rely on, but also do a little more to support Beacon, which offers so much to the most vulnerable people in our community,” said Bailey.

The WFIU’s goal is to raise $25,000 on Tuesday in donations, which would equal nearly 170 pairs of socks to be provided to Beacon by the IU Credit Union.

“IU Credit Union values serving our community in a way that makes a positive and lasting impact,” said Karen Earley-Mullis, Chief Marketing Officer of IU Credit Union. “We are proud to partner with WFIU and Beacon to provide warm, essential items to those in need in our community.”
