Three weekends of handicraft exhibitions help the peninsula organization bring hope to local families

YORK COUNTY, Virginia – A peninsula organization is committed to bringing “hope” to families in need throughout the holiday season, not just this Thanksgiving week.

And it uses a series of pop-ups and craft shows to aid the effort.

Giving Hope in Hampton Roads is an organization founded in 2010 by Karen Whaley and her daughter Julie Corbin to help families in need … whatever they are.

“Knowing someone has Thanksgiving dinner on their table? It’s very rewarding,” said Whaley of Grafton Baptist Church in York County after donating turkey and side dishes to the Heart of Giving nonprofit.

On Saturday, 10 am-3pm, Giving Hope hosted the Thanksgiving Food Drive and Craft Show in the church gym on Hampton Roads.

Sellers donate to build and sell their handcrafted goods. Whaley says she and her team plan to turn the money raised into meals for families.

It is only the first of three weekends in a row the organization is holding to bring hope through the holidays.

On November 27, a pop-up at Dodd RV in York County will support the Conner Gweedo Memorial Foundation, named after the Tabb High School student who died in a car accident in 2019.

On the same day, money is raised at a cornhole tournament in Chesapeake to provide Christmas gifts for families in need. A Tinsel Town Bazaar will do the same at church seven days later.

Give hope in Hampton Roads

“[Giving Hope in Hampton Roads Vice President Tanya Filer] and i both came from the same background. We didn’t have much growing up, and we always vowed that we’d never see anyone go hungry or without Christmas if we could prevent it, ”said Whaley. “If someone needs help, we hope they reach out to us in some form or way and let us give them hope.”
