A large group of family and friends of well-known Darlington man Mark Scarr, who lost his life to cancer, embark on a 26-mile charity hike.

The Mighty Hike Scarr group, which has 15 family and friends including Mark’s widow Christine, smashed its goal for the event by contributing to the total donations of £26,000 raised so far for Macmillan since Mark’s untimely death from liver cancer in February 2020.

They will walk from Alnwick Castle to Bamburgh Castle on July 16 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Christine Scarr, who met Mark in 2010, said: “This area is particularly close to my heart as Mark and I honeymooned in Alnmouth and have vacationed there every year.

“All the places in Northumberland that the Scarr Mighty Hike group will pass through will hold great memories for us. I know it will be a bit overwhelming and emotional.

Mark, 55, went for a check-up at his local GP in 2019 at Christine’s encouragement as he hadn’t been there in over 30 years; at this point, he had no symptoms.

Tragically, following abnormal blood work results leading to further tests, he was soon diagnosed with life-limiting liver cancer. Mark passed away on February 20, 2020, leaving his devoted wife Christine, children, close family, friends and all who knew him devastated.

Christine said: ‘It was kind of heartwarming for me, Mark’s family and friends that we were able to channel our grief into raising money for the charity that looked after him so well towards the end. of his life and provided us with invaluable support. as a family dealing with the trauma of it all.

The Scarr family and friends have been dedicated to raising funds for Macmillan with cake sales, the world’s greatest coffees at the Devonport Hotel where Mark’s daughter Rebecca works, a hike in the Yorkshire Dales Macmillan Mighty Hike, a day of golf at Darlington Golf Club and many other activities.
