(LOS ANGELES) – Maurizio Vecchione, Chief Innovation Officer of the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation, was recently awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. It is the highest distinction in the republic and is awarded for services or achievements in the public service, in business, in literature and in the arts, as well as for social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities.
At a ceremony at the Italian Consulate in Century City, California, the title of Cavaliere Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana was awarded to Mr. Vecchione, where he received the badge and ribbon of a Knight of the Italian Republic.
Maurizio Vecchione has been at the forefront of global and public health for more than 30 years, focusing on innovation to improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. He has built global alliances for breakthrough programs in women’s health, infectious disease prevention and eradication, primary care and chronic disease treatment, and is currently also CEO of the Washington Global Health Alliance, a coalition of some of the leading global health institutions.
At the award ceremony, one of Mr. Vecchione’s many effective health innovations was highlighted. This diagnostic technology uses artificial intelligence to extract data from cervical images captured by connecting a special device to an ordinary cell phone camera. The artificial intelligence model can then be used to predict the occurrence of cervical cancer with 98% efficiency, as opposed to traditional PAP smears which are 60% accurate. Such an innovation has already benefited over 25 million women in 111 countries around the world.
Mr. Vecchione has also been commended for the innovative and entrepreneurial endeavors he is dedicated to in his role at the Terasaki Institute. He says, “The Terasaki Institute is no ordinary research facility. We are moved by the idea that you have to combine scientific research with innovation and even entrepreneurship in order to be effective. It is this combination that speeds translation and ultimately brings to life the greatest solutions of tomorrow that will save lives. “
