Six are vying for three seats on New Baltimore City Council – The Voice


Three incumbent members of the New Baltimore City Council will run against three challengers in the November 2nd election.

Voters are asked to select up to three of the six candidates running for three four-year terms: incumbents Ryan Covert, David D. Duffy and Carl Weinreich, and challengers Jeffrey T. Byrum, Mel Eason Jr. and Stan Russell.

City council members earn $ 157 per session, which averaged about $ 5,000 in 2020, officials said.

The polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day.

The Voice sent out questionnaires to all six candidates, asking them to provide biographical information and answer three other questions. Each answer was limited to 50 words. Your answers are below.

AQ and A with the candidates

• THE VOICE: Biography: Please provide information about yourself, including your age, education, community involvement and previous political experience.

– BYRUM: I moved to New Baltimore with my wife Catherine in 2013. I work locally for Ebbco Inc. as a purchasing manager / director. I am currently working on my CIS degree at SC4. I am currently serving as Treasurer in the ZBA, DDA, and I am the first VP and Communications Officer for NB Lions.

– HIDDEN: Ryan Covert (31) 27 years in town, engaged to Samantha and cementing our own roots together. Proud Anchor Bay (’08), University of Michigan (’12) alumni. I am a member of the Lions and I am currently serving my first term on the council. Read more at

– DUFFY: 53 year old Ferris State BSW graduate. Current New Baltimore City Council. Community Service Positions: President of the Civic Club, Board Member of Goodfellows, Liaison Officer for KofC # 5981, AB Outreach Group. Citizens Advisory Board Liaison, Chairman of the NB Roads and Utilities Committee. Memberships: McClaren Foundation Board and Health Care Associations of Michigan Legislature Committee.

– REASON: I’ve been married to Shani for 17 years; three sons. I’m a 42nd Air Force Veteran and Lieutenant with the Selfridge Fire Department, where I’ve been employed for 20 years. Youth football coach nine years. Associate Degrees in Fire Science / General Studies. Bachelor in fire service administration. MBA in Public Administration. In search of masters of divinity.

– RUSSELL: I am 53 years old; City dweller for 22 years. I have a BS in Telecommunications Management and I work in the telecommunications / technology services industry. I am active in the community and in the government: zoning committee, citizens’ council and council, interim appointment. Active board member of the Huron Pointe Sportsmen’s Association.

– WINE LAND: I’m 55. My wife and I are homeowners and both own small businesses in our family-run Tennyson Building downtown. I am currently the city councilor and liaison officer for DDA, ZBA, Parks / Rec and police. I am a Civic Club, Bay-Rama and Lions Club member, and President of NBBA.

• DIE STIMME: What do you think makes you the most qualified candidate?

– BYRUM: I feel like I am the best qualified because of my life, work and volunteering experience. In my daily life, I am responsible for managing people, parts, and production. I can see the bigger picture to help achieve goals. I am ready to work and try to make things better!

– HIDDEN: My dedication, preparation and willingness to compromise. I have learned and work hard to support the members of the commissions assigned to me and the projects I have chosen. And I believe I have the record that shows my effectiveness and ability to do things for our city.

– DUFFY: Over 25 years of experience developing and managing budgets as a nursing home administrator. Bringing real life experience and knowledge into the tax responsibilities required in running a community. I have lived in New Baltimore for 22 years and have been involved in its growth, both as a city representative and a civil service representative.

– REASON: What qualifies me for the job is my heart for serving people. It was my heart’s desire to be a person of service. Whether it was my time serving our country, my current work as a firefighter / first responder, or my involvement in the service.

– RUSSELL: I have a keen interest in our community and our schools. I’ve worked in a leadership role, I’m detail-oriented and able to work with anyone to find common ground. I want our city to improve and push for what our residents would like to see.

– WINE LAND: As your current councilor, I have the knowledge and experience to continue helping New Baltimore be the best city it can be. I am a proactive leader active in our community and I am committed to being the voice of the people and doing what is best for the residents.

• THE VOICE: If you are elected, what changes, if any, will you envision during your term in office?

– BYRUM: I will improve communication with the residents and the city authorities. Update the city’s website with new forms and online tools. With my shopping background, I will make smarter buying decisions to save money. Create a welcoming business environment with one process. Improve our community through engagement.

– HIDDEN: I will continue to work to come up with a long-term road condition improvement plan, ensure the city receives Redevelopment Ready certification by completing work on streamlining laws and policies that are hindering economic growth, and attempting to phase out 1 Complete the Washington / Front development and introduce a smartphone app to improve transparency and communication.

– DUFFY: The growth of our current inner city district with its new residential, retail and marina. Develop and upgrade the 23 Mile / Green Street corridor to encourage improvement across the city.

– REASON: I want to support our New Baltimore Fire Department by assisting with all available options to increase their efficiency and effectiveness, by ensuring they have all the resources necessary to keep our city’s residents safe 24 hours a day, seven Guarantee days a week.

– RUSSELL: During my tenure, I cannot make promises or direct changes on my own, but I envision a joint board of directors listening to ideas I hope our New Baltimore residents will bring forward. I would like our roads, parks and safety to be continuously improved.

– WINE LAND: I don’t see any big changes in our great community. I think we need to continue the progress we have made so far. I would continue to encourage owners of vacant buildings to complete their restoration projects, and I would also work diligently with the city council to tackle the rot.

• THE VOICE: What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the city and how would you approach it if elected?

– BYRUM: The city’s infrastructure needs and the fire brigade have priority due to the underfunding. There must be responsible spending and funding for exploration. This requires a cohesive team and a dedicated community. I will use whatever resources are within our reach and do the hard work to move forward!

– HIDDEN: I continue to regard road conditions as the most complex and comprehensive challenge that the Council has to face. Assuming the bond passes, I will prioritize responsibility, accountability, and protection of the plan and intent of the program. If the application is rejected, I am back at the drawing board first and try to solve this problem for the residents.

– DUFFY: Infrastructure costs, maintenance and replacement of our roads, bridges, sewage and rainwater systems are our challenge. Ensure that the funds received from Law 51 are used sensibly for the replacement and maintenance of roads. The water and sewage charges are being reviewed to ensure that the funds allocated are being used to maintain and improve our current infrastructure.

– REASON: Depending on which resident you speak to, the challenges of the city are very different. One of the recurring themes I heard was “communication”. I want to work towards a more seamless approach to delivering information to residents by sharing more information through the city’s online resources.

– RUSSELL: One of the biggest challenges I see is effectively managing the growth of our city and making sure our infrastructure can support it. I advocate a review of the infrastructure and a careful examination of the commercial and new residential buildings in our city.

– WINE LAND: I believe we need to maintain the city’s infrastructure, including water and sewage, and public safety through police and fire services. We must continue to look for ways to finance state and federal grants, as well as ways to self-finance, to ensure these systems work efficiently.
