Learners at Otago Polytechnic from various disciplines combine their brains for charity.

Tauira studies events, hairdressing, fashion, beauty and photography and brings to life “Odyssey for a Cure”, which will raise funds for Breast Cancer Cure.

Held at the Sargood Center on Friday, June 17, the event will feature a fashion evening featuring New Zealand designers Sara Munro (Company of Strangers) and Charmaine Reveley, as well as fashion students from the Otago Polytechnic School of Design.

The student-led initiative is a good example of our applied approach to real-world learning, according to Rachel Byars, senior lecturer at Otago Polytechnic’s Te Maru Pumanawa: College of Creative Practice and Enterprise.

“What makes learning at Otago Polytechnic great is the hands-on experiences we provide for students.

“For example, our third-year event management students have to bring an event to life for a real client – in this case, Breast Cancer Cure.

“These opportunities, offered in a safe learning environment, allow them to develop a range of skills, such as collaboration, communication and time management. These are all powerful skills they can use in their future careers. .”
