MANISTEE – The Old Kirke Museum is to feature a demonstration on the Gilmore Car Museum by Fred Colgren as part of its free First Person Stories and Songs series.

The program is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on July 14 at the museum.

“The Gilmore Car Museum is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the American automobile,” reads a statement for the event.

The museum, located in Hickory Corners near Kalamazoo, displays more than 400 vintage and collectible vehicles on a 90-acre campus. Colgren is currently in his 10th year as the museum’s director of education.

The museum’s series of first-person stories and songs is set to continue every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. through August – with Barbara Mort on The Power of Storytelling; Kit Holmes singing Sultry Summer Lovin’ Songs on August 4; Jen Masengarb speaking on Lessons from Denmark: More than Hygge, August 11; Margaret Piatt talks about Circling Home, or “I was a tour guide prodigy”, August 16; and The Old Kirke Band and Friends Jammin’ at the Old Kirke on August 25.

In addition to the Thursday morning programs, the museum is hosting this summer Museums of the Manistee River Valley, an exhibit showcasing the smaller museums of this region. It will be on display in the Lower Exhibit Hall near the Madsen Dioramas.

The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first two Saturdays of the month, until October. The museum may be open on other days as volunteers continue the restoration and rehabilitation of the former Danish Lutheran Church.
