A group, Nigeria Democracy Defense Watch (NDDW) has warned of the danger of presenting a Muslim/Muslim ticket by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 presidential election, warning that such a development will not will not only be a threat to national stability but could also set back peace and security in Nigeria.
In a 7-page letter written to President Muhammadu Buhari, a copy obtained by Blueprint, the civic group said the Muslim/Muslim ticket if the APC goes ahead with the agenda will only paint Nigeria as an Islamic and sectarian nation that will ultimately be resisted by the country’s millions of practicing Christians, moderate and progressive Muslims and civic groups, ethno-cultural associations and enlightened members of the international community.
Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Adamu and Otunba Adeniji Niyi Adegoke who are respectively the National Coordinator and National Secretary of Nigeria Democracy Defense Watch in the letter to the President entitled ‘APC’s Muslim/Muslim ticket in Nigeria’s 2023 Elections’: A threat to national stability, regional peace and security”, expressed particular concern about the international dimension it is taking with a recent letter from 5 American senators to the United States Senate where they call for the readmission of Nigeria as a country Of Particular Concern (CPC) given the worsening sectarian violence in the country.
US senators observed that “horrible acts of deadly violence have been committed against Nigerians
Christians in recent weeks, including the massacre of worshipers on Pentecost Sunday and the stoning of a Christian student. Sadly, such violence has become all too familiar to Christians in Africa’s most populous country… Religious violence and intolerance towards Nigerian Christians has worsened in recent years. A report has documented over 4,650 cases of Nigerian Christians being killed for their faith in 2021.’
Nigeria Democracy Defense Watch has therefore called on President Buhari to order the security forces to do the necessary by advising APC Presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling party of any security threats the action may pose. from the country.
“It is pertinent to note the serious security implications of the above. It is especially when one rightly imagines that Christians will feel threatened by a Muslim/Muslim ticket, and may resort to preaching from the pulpit and mobilizing opinions across Christianity. Civil society organizations and students would likely protest this destructive introduction into our politics in a variety of ways, which could pose security concerns. However, it should be noted that the “original sin” is the adoption of a Muslim/Muslim ticket by the ruling APC, not the reactions and responses that may follow. »
The group that had the letter to the president copied to all heads of democratic and security institutions in Nigeria as well as other international concerns also warned of the danger that such a political arrangement could cause the continental security.
“West African sub-regional and, indeed, African regional peace and security rests fundamentally on Nigeria’s presumption of political stability, or at least, the absence of any conflict that could overwhelm the Nigerian state. Indeed, nothing in Africa’s peace and security architecture is designed to contain conflict in Africa’s largest population of over 200 million in a country that shares highly porous borders with three sub -regions – West, Central and North Africa.
“First, its humanitarian consequences are frightening to imagine – in the event of civil war or armed conflict in Nigeria, there will be complete sub-regional collapse within 72 hours, if only 5% of the Nigerian population crosses borders. Its economic repercussions will be an utter calamity across the entire sub-regions of West and Central Africa. The security implication of arms proliferation and the explosion of the two murderous terrorist organizations currently based in Nigeria , in the rest of the entire African continent, can only be better imagined.
“We therefore implore you to use your good offices to pressure Sen Bola Ahmed Tinubu to exercise caution and refrain from his adamant desire to impose a MUSLIM-MUSLIM ticket on the nation which, if he succeeds, will make the aforementioned tragic and destructive humanitarian quagmire a distinct possibility.
