Chandigarh MP (MP) Kirron Kher on Monday inaugurated the Area 21 Community Center, which she says will provide people with the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of activities, in addition to promoting social inclusion and the feeling of belonging. UT Civic Body Mayor Sarbjit Kaur, his Deputy Anup Gupta and Civic Body Commissioner Anindita Mitra attended the occasion.

Addressing a rally after Monday’s inauguration, Kher said community centers provide a space where the community can engage in collective activities. She said the centers are strategically located to serve citizens who are used for cultural programs, to organize weddings and for other social activities.

She said the idea of the community center was to provide a place where all members of the community – young and old – can meet for various activities. Too often, she says, community centers are often the only places available these days for residents to gather.

Mayor Sarabjit Kaur, who also addressed the rally after MP Kher, said the Sector 21 community center building was built on an area of 23,344 square feet and spread over an area of approximately 0, 53 acre at a cost of Rs 581 lakh. She said this community center had a capacity of 500 people at a time and was built with enough parking space.

“This community center is the best of its kind in the city and consists of a lobby, pantry, kitchen, office, caretaker’s room, lobby, entrance, a staircase, an elevator and toilet blocks on the ground floor. Two halls, a bedroom for the bride, a bedroom for the groom, a dormitory, a staircase, an elevator and a toilet were also available on the first floor. A gymnasium, two halls, a library, an open terrace and a toilet constituted the 2nd floor,” said Mayor Sarbjit Kaur.

The mayor said that this community center will be a good asset to the local residents of the area as they can hold parties and other programs here at very nominal government approved rates.
