Ministry program seeks volunteers to assist inmates and staff at Henry County Jail

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) — One of the most promising things about the new Henry County Adult Detention Center is the added space for classrooms.

Good News Jail & Prison Ministries is a program used to help inmates turn their lives around.

The organization places chaplains in jails and prisons to meet the spiritual needs of inmates and staff. Providing this care to hundreds of people requires a lot of support, so the program is looking for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and skills.

“We’re just here to make a difference,” says Good News Jail & Prison Ministries chaplain Joe Collins. “We want Henry County Jail to be a place of transformation so that when men and women come here, they come to the end of their lives, they leave here transformed. [They’re] go out and add to their family, add to their neighborhood, add to their community, add to their workplace so they can contribute something positive.

There are only about 500 departments nationwide and 3,200 local jails, making the Henry County program unique.
