A Portland man with a long history of volunteering for community childcare organizations is charged with sexually abusing a child more than a decade ago, and police believe he may have had other alleged victims.
Henry Stephen “Steve” Bauer, 58, was charged with four first-degree sexual abuse charges on May 27 after a woman reported to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office that Bauer had molested her as a child. Detectives arrested Bauer at his home in southwest Portland on June 2.
Court documents indicate that in Washington County in 2009, Bauer molested a girl who was under the age of 14.
In investigating the abuse, detectives found that Bauer had been a regular volunteer with half a dozen organizations since 1970, most of which work with children. Investigators said they found allegations of Bauer’s wrongdoing dating back to the 1970s, although Bauer was never convicted of a sex offense, according to the Oregon state’s online court database.
In 1993, Bauer was removed from his role as a scout leader for molesting a young boy, detectives said.
Bauer has also volunteered at Alpenrose Dairyville, Neah-Kah-Nie High School, Portland Revels, the Rockaway Beach Police Department, and the Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts.
Anyone with information on Bauer is encouraged to call the Washington County Sheriff’s office at 503-846-2700.
