Grey-Bruce Home and Community Services relies on volunteers as they seek to expand local service delivery.

A statement from HCSS says it urgently needs new volunteers, especially volunteer drivers who can help elderly and disabled people get to their surgeries, medical appointments, respite services and at the grocery store. Currently, many transportation requests are denied due to a lack of available drivers. Before the pandemic, HCSS Grey-Bruce says they had over 100 drivers, and they currently have 55.

HCSS Grey-Bruce reimburses mileage at 50 cents/km, but the statement says they understand this is a financial commitment for drivers beyond just gas prices, which continue to be very high.

“While the pandemic has had negative impacts on healthcare in terms of capacity and staffing shortages, there is also another lingering threat facing the nonprofit sector. Volunteering is down, locally and nationally,” says Stephen Musehl,
Executive Director of HCSS Gray Bruce.
