David and Mary Haslam are Senior Services Volunteers of the Month for April for their outstanding service as Meals on Wheels drivers.

“They are dedicated and are here every week,” says Michele Burkett, Food Services Coordinator. “They are always happy and helpful.”

Meals on Wheels drivers make up the agency’s largest group of volunteers with approximately 182. There are 20 Meals on Wheels routes throughout Midland County and meals are delivered Monday through Friday.

And these volunteers do more than deliver a meal – they bring friendly smiles and are an outside contact – something much appreciated by the customers they serve.

David and Mary have been volunteers since May 2016 and have accumulated over 1,111 volunteer hours. The Haslams deliver meals together once a week, and David was previously a transport driver for the agency.

“We can do this volunteering together,” says Mary. “We love helping others and giving back to our community.

Elizabeth Baldwin, Nutrition Systems Coordinator, says, “These are volunteers we can rely on to be very thorough and efficient with delivery and documentation, including customer concerns.

Originally from South Carolina, David and Mary moved to Midland 39 years ago, the same year they married for their work at Dow. They are blessed with a son and a daughter. They enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when not volunteering.

“Services for the elderly fill a critical need for customers, and without it people could not stay in their homes,” noted David.

The Meals on Wheels program offers nutritious and balanced meals delivered to a seniors’ residence by a volunteer. A senior can take comfort in knowing that a good meal and a friendly face accompany every visit.
