Andrew Hubert Special to the record

Hello Crawdads fans! My name is Andrew Hubert, the Hickory Crawdads Marketing and Advertising Assistant 2021. I am delighted to have the opportunity to write Crawdad’s Corner this week and tell you a little bit about myself and what I do for the team.

I’m originally from Haymarket, Virginia, a small town about 30 miles outside of Washington, DC, in northern Virginia (or as we say “NOVA”). My family and I are big sports fans. My grandfather worked for the Washington Capitals and started their second season as a statistician for 20 years.

When the Montreal Expos moved to Washington, DC to become the Washington Nationals, my grandfather was one of the first to buy season tickets, which he still owns today. When I was growing up, he took me to 12 of the first 13 National home starts. That’s when my love for baseball began. We sat in the stands where he explained the rules and taught me the basics. I started with tea ball and played through sixth grade. My grandfather even coached one of my baseball teams.

My parents graduated from Florida State University and are huge college football fans. They took me to my first game when I was just a couple of weeks old. In 2008 they bought season tickets for Washington’s NHL team, the Washington Capitals. At that time, my siblings and I started playing hockey, with my father as a coach. I fell in love with hockey as much as I fell in love with baseball. I played for my high school varsity hockey team, and when I graduated, I played for the University of Tennessee club hockey team. Yes, believe it or not, the SEC has a club hockey league of 17 teams.
