What do we know about the housing market in Berks County?

We know that house prices are rising dramatically. We know that much of the housing stock is ageing, particularly in the town of Reading and the immediate suburbs. Is there a sufficient supply of affordable housing? What about rental accommodation?

Looking at demographics can help us understand housing need and the challenges presented by our current housing stock. Data on the age, racial and ethnic composition, socio-economic status of residents in our county can give us insight into the challenges and opportunities we face in meeting our housing needs.

Tom Love is director of PolicyMap, an online data and mapping tool used by government agencies, health and housing organizations, planning and economic development organizations, and other nonprofits at the national scale. Tom will show how to use geospatial data on housing, health, demographics, and area services and amenities to help guide efforts to address challenges in these areas. It will show Berks County data in each of these areas and how it intersects with the housing challenges facing our community.

PolicyMap was started as an organization in 2007 by Reinvestment Fund, a Philadelphia-based community development finance institution that supports affordable housing, access to health care and healthy food, education, and other community development programs in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and across the United States.
