BALTIMORE, Md. (January 14, 2022) – Morgan State’s indoor track and field teams kick off the New Year on Saturday, Jan. 15, as the Bears travel to compete in the HBCU Showcase at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York, NY.

The meeting pays homage to the rich history of the American institutions of the HBCU.

“The HBCU showcase is a great opportunity to bridge the gap between academics and athletics,” said Bassett Thompson, director of athletics at the Armory. “The Showcase is so much more than an athletic event. Welcoming historically black colleges and universities to The Armory on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend speaks volumes about our long-standing commitment to fulfilling the dream of so many. ‘local student-athletes a reality – to become future leaders in their communities and across the country.’

Sensational Step teams from Delaware State and Morgan State will perform during the meet. In addition to the full college program, five high school events will be added to the program: the 300 m, 600 m, 4×200 m relay, long jump and shot put.

The HBCU Showcase debuted at The Armory in 2018. This is the fourth run of this meetup and is now considered a staple of The Armory’s January schedule.

Academic representatives from Central State, Clark Atlanta University, Delaware State, Howard, Lincoln, Morgan State, Prairie View A&M, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, University of the District of Columbia and Voohees College will also be at The Armory to participate in a College Frequently share admission information about their respective school to attending high school students.

“We intended to introduce the unique culture of HBCU schools to our New York track and field athletes, with this year’s HBCU showcase,” said Rita Finkel, co-president of the Armory Foundation. “We are thrilled to have college admissions officers on hand to meet some of our talented students, who have their eyes set on the future.”

The meet begins at 9:30 a.m. with the field events and running events beginning at 11:15 a.m.
