Traditionally, winter is the time of year when you add layers to your clothes, not shed them entirely, but the hardy – and charitable – locals of Abbeyfeale are bucking the trend this year, all for a very good cause.

The Bare Essentials’ is the new charity initiative from the people of West Limerick City; the project is a calendar the city has produced to showcase our city with over 100 “naked” community volunteers photographed – by local photographer John D Morris – in the style of “The Calendar Girls”.

The town has partnered with the Irish Cancer Society and €10 from every calendar sale will go directly to the amazing work the charity does.

The official launch of the calendar will take place this Saturday 29th October at Fr Casey’s GAA in Abbeyfeale at 7.30pm.

In the evening, the group will do the big reveal of all the footage, only a very small group saw the finished product.

They will also be selling the calendar locally in over 30 locations and they have set up an online store so they can ship to other counties, countries and overseas to the Irish diaspora.

“The story of the calendar is that of our city and our community, some great stories of hope and sadly others of loss,” said photographer John D Morris this week.

“We also have a couple who actually got married where we had a wedding with different vendors without anyone actually knowing they got married, their wedding has to be announced in the calendar itself,” he said. he continued.
